Rodney was born in Durham, NC on June 20, 1971 the last child of Willie Wadsworth and Estelle Rogers. While Rodney’s father died when he was eight years old his mother, older sister and brothers still reside in Durham.Rodney spent most of his childhood growing up in the McDougald Terrace Housing Project in Durham fending for himself most days while attending Hillside High School. The brighter side of school for Rodney was basketball and he earned a two time Greensboro News & Record All-State selection and eventually was named the 1990 North Carolina state player of the year. As a junior he averaged 22.5 points and 9.7 rebounds. As a senior he averaged 28.3 points and 12.3 rebounds on a team that finished 27-2 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the state 4-A playoffs.Rodney later played college basketball at Wake Forest University from 1990 until 1993, where he won the 1990-1991 the Atlantic Coast Conference season Rookie of the Year honor over Duke’s Grant Hill and ACC Player of the Year in 1993, averaging 21.2 points and 7.4 rebounds. His final college statistics were 19.3 points and 7.9 rebounds. Rodney’s hard work paid off when he was selected as the ninth pick in the 1993 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets.

Rodney played in the NBA from 1993 until he retired in 2005; he won the prestigious NBA Sixth Man of the year honor in 2000 as a member of the Phoenix Suns. Rodney played for the Nuggets, Clippers, Suns, Celtics, Nets, Hornets and Sixers.After retiring from the NBA, Rodney returned to Durham in 2006 and went to work for the City of Durham as a heavy equipment operator. Rogers was promoted to supervisor in the spring of 2008. On November 28, 2008 Rodney was involved in a dirt bike accident in rural Vance County, North Carolina. He hit a ditch while riding through a trail on an ATV and flipped over his vehicle's handlebars. He was flown to the Duke Medical Center, and then moved by air ambulance to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Rodney’s body is paralyzed from the shoulders down as a result of his accident but his mind and spirit are as strong as ever. Rodney started The Rodney Rogers Foundation and plans to travel and speak about his life and accident as well as document his experiences in an upcoming book.
